more on cold-callers

by Znethru @ 30 Jun. 2006 - 23.52:00

I am regularly driven nuts

...by 'cold-callers'.

Does anyone know the phone number that can get you deleted from these lists? [...Not that I believe that this is really possible!]

In the mean time, I will try my 'exterminate' method (assuming someone can direct me to the relevant website).

Are there any other sites with amusing/irritating methods of getting rid of cold callers - preferably with 'live' speech.

Tea

by Znethru @ 30 Jun. 2006 - 18.16:12

Never drink tea on your own time.

not amusing

by Znethru @ 30 Jun. 2006 - 15.01:25

It's not funny sitting around waiting for someone to turn up at your front door.

tough nut to crack

by Znethru @ 30 Jun. 2006 - 14.55:53

Today has been a bit grinding. I've been making demo CDs (I always do two identical ones). Have made two, tested one ...and about to test the other one when I suddenly confuse the two and have to start over!

It's a bit warm for teaching the piano so I have to remember not to raise my voice (too much) later today.

visit(ation)

by Znethru @ 30 Jun. 2006 - 14.06:50

My father is about to put in his usual appearance. I've banned his dog but he always seems to forget this fact and bring him along anyway.

I've been so busy with things that I haven't managed to get a card game in for 10 days. However, I'm rectifying that tonight with a game of duplicate pairs at Pinner Bridge Club.

Busy time...

by Znethru @ 30 Jun. 2006 - 14.04:57

I've been preparing packages to send to USA. I've found a music student who is going to produce an in-depth analysis of my Jazz Symphony and (among other things) try to identify the 33 grooves!

Also finalising the finishing touches for my new CD: 'Piano Colours'.

The latest has been to get the programme notes written up. So far, 3 musicians have been involved in trying to write these notes for me and the work is only about 1/3rd complete!

G & S

by Znethru @ 29 Jun. 2006 - 11.13:58

I am a (fairly) recent convert to G & S. I used to avoid their work like the plague but ever since Mike Leigh's Topsy Turvy I have come to appreciate just how incredible their work is.

Just got hold of the ABC (Australian) version of Pinafore & Trial by Jury. Haven't had a chance to watch the whole thing yet as I'm busy proofreading at the moment, but hopefully there will be some spare time tonight.

Making things happen

by Znethru @ 29 Jun. 2006 - 01.18:57

Have you ever given any time and thought as to how much energy you put into trying to make things happen?

I seem to spend many hours of my day trying to convince other people to do A,B or C on my behalf (usually on the premise that it will do them some moral good or that they ought to do a good deed for the day!)

It usually takes (at least) two people, sometimes even a whole team of people to accomplish something.

I have been described elsewhere as a relentless self-promoter(!)

Of course, this is not an easy attitude to cultivate. Ideally, I would like to get the whole world working for me (that would be the most profitable way of getting things done!)

All I am saying is, teams of people are required and there are bound to be weak links in the chain. Make sure you're not one of them.

Late night musings

by Znethru @ 29 Jun. 2006 - 01.13:13

Reading the 'angry' section of Tim Lott's Don Juan made me get up out of bed and switch the computer back on.

His hero has been through something of a messy divorce and ended up in financial ruin - a bit of a cautionary tale!

I'm still enjoying G & S 'Patience' which I will probably spin a few more times before I switch DVDs.

A Tail soft to tread...

by Znethru @ 28 Jun. 2006 - 23.15:01

There is no need to blog sometimes.

Weird.

Sometimes you have to 'live' instead.

Original Blog Titles

by Znethru @ 28 Jun. 2006 - 23.01:35

Does someone already have a blog called 'delicious hot or cold' as it occurred to me (for no apparent reason) that this would be a good name for a blog!

Are you flexible? A fun test for all the family!

by Znethru @ 27 Jun. 2006 - 21.11:15

How to tell if you're flexible.

1. You should always be flexible a) Yes b) No c) Maybe

2. You should be flexible about some things i.e. the amount of money you are prepared to spend on decent hifi a) Maybe b) Yes c) No

3. You should not be flexible about important matters in life i.e. the name of your pet goldfish a) No b) Maybe c) Yes

Now work out your score by taking the cos of the sin minus the tan of the pi and subtract it from -1.

G & S - 'Patience'

by Znethru @ 27 Jun. 2006 - 21.05:38

LSO, Ambrosian Chorus, Derek Hammond-Stroud, Sandra Dugdale, Donald Adams, Roderick Kennedy and Terry Jenkins.

I managed to organise an evening in and am currently enjoying this delightful Operetta - it just cannot fail to raise a smile.

I tried to watch Topsy Turvy (for about the 9th time) earlier, but was having skipping (or more accurately 'pausing' problems).

This Operetta is a huge send-up of Oscar Wilde (and in a way, of Gilbert himself).

(from Wikipedia ~ )

Patience (1881) satirized the aesthetic movement in general, and the poet and aesthete Algernon Swinburne in particular, as well as male vanity and chauvinism in the military.

It's the morning...

by Znethru @ 27 Jun. 2006 - 09.48:16

It's the morning, so obviously nothing has happened.

I have a 'to do' list in front of me running to several pages most of which I am trying to avoid getting round to. In particular there is one 'chasing' phone call I am anxious to avoid.

It's not particularly amusing chasing people, even less so if it is regarding money!

rude word

by Znethru @ 26 Jun. 2006 - 12.22:00

Person A left a msg on my a/fone asking me to phone back without leaving a number - I dial 1471 no number available.

Personages B and C have not responded to 3 emails left last week.

Person D just responded via email avec sarcasm en haute to 2 mobile messages and a text.

This day is taking a dive.

Today feels exciting for no particular reason

by Znethru @ 26 Jun. 2006 - 11.27:23

Could it be the rainy weather, the fact that I am playing Brahms 3 + Brahms 4 = Bruckner's 7th or the fact that England progressed through to the 1/4-finals?

I have a busy schedule ahead of me on the proof-reading front. It's such close and intense work that I have to do it in short bursts while I am really fresh.

I am working on 6 bagatelles for Bassoon and Piano at the moment - the Oboe set will be next on the menu.

Footballing novelty

by Znethru @ 25 Jun. 2006 - 21.08:36

...how about, instead of a penalty, you can get a 'multiball' (in the way that you used to be able to with some old-fashioned pinball machines.)

Anyone experiencing rain out there?

by Znethru @ 25 Jun. 2006 - 20.44:23

Still very dry over here in N W London.

Moonshine

by Znethru @ 24 Jun. 2006 - 13.02:43

I have (all but) given up trying to sell sensible items on eBay. All of my sensibly priced bargain items get ignored, never receive bids or questions and remain on the scrapheap.

However, put something silly on eBay (like 'Moonshine' = the shine of the moon) and you immediately get a bid on it.

How do people explain this?

Chekhov : The Seagull : NT

by Znethru @ 24 Jun. 2006 - 12.03:05

10/10 recommendation. (Stars Juliet Stevenson).

I am not going to write a massive review of this performance as time doesn't exactly permit, but if you remotely get the chance of seeing this play at the NT, please go.

This play must have been seen as hyper-modern at the time it was written as it still appears fresh and relevant today. One of the earliest truly psychological plays, each of the leading characters is portrayed with immense (although insouciant) skill.

It is an interesting exercise to work out which of the characters Chekhov most associates himself with as it has been said that all writing is (at least to some extent) autobiographical.

Main Themes: Love/Relationships, Writing, Life in the Country, Money.

Gold standard (metaphorical definition).

by Znethru @ 21 Jun. 2006 - 01.22:38

A model of excellence; a paragon: “Several generations of the laser have been widely available in Europe; the FDA approved the one now considered the gold standard”.

Gold standard (literal definition).

by Znethru @ 21 Jun. 2006 - 01.21:26

The gold standard is a monetary system in which the standard economic unit of account is a fixed weight of gold.

Under the gold standard, currency issuers guarantee to redeem notes in that amount of gold. Governments that employ such a fixed unit of account, and which will redeem their notes to other governments in gold, share a fixed currency relationship.

Supporters of the gold standard system claim it is more resistant to credit and debt expansion. Unlike a fiat currency, the money backed by gold cannot be created arbitrarily by government action. This restraint prevents the artificial inflation by the devaluation of currency. This is supposed to remove "currency uncertainty", keep the credit of the issuing monetary authority sound, and encourage lending. Nevertheless, countries under the gold standard underwent debt crises and depressions throughout the history of its use.

The gold standard is no longer used in any nation, having been replaced completely by fiat currency. It is still in private use by private institutions in the supply of digital gold currency, which use gold grams as money.

OUAGADOUGOU-BURKINA FASO.

by Znethru @ 20 Jun. 2006 - 16.19:42

FROM THE DESK OF MR JOHN WILLIAM
BILLS AND EXCHANGE MANAGER,
BANK OF AFRICA (B.O.A)
OUAGADOUGOU-BURKINA FASO.

Dear Friend,

I am the manager of bill and exchange at the foreign remittance department of BANK OF AFRICA (B.O.A) here in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. In my department we discovered an abandoned sum of US$30m dollars (THIRTY Million US dollars) in an account that belongs to one of our foreign customer (MR.
ENGR. STEVEN MOORE, AUSTRALIA) who died along with his entire family in Jully 2000 in a plane crash.

Since we got information about his death, we have been expecting his next of kin to come over and claim his money because we cannot release it unless some body applies for it as next of kin or relation to the deceased as indicated in our banking guidlings and laws but unfortunately we learnt that all his supposed next of kin or relation died alongside with him at the plane crash leaving nobody behind for the claim. It is therefore upon this discovery that I now decided to make this business proposal to you and release the money to you as the next of kin or relation to the deceased for safety and subsequent disbursement since nobody is coming for it and we don't want this money to go into the bank treasury as unclaimed bill.

The banking law and guidline here stipulates that if such money remained unclaimed after five years, the money will be transfered into the bank treasury as unclaimed fund. The request of foreigner as next of kin in this business is occassioned by the fact that the customer was a foreigner and a Burkinabe cannot stand as next of kin to a foreigner.

I agree that 30% of this money will be for you as a respect to the provision of a foriegn account , 10% will be set aside for expenses incurred during the business and 60% would be for me Thereafter, I will visit your country for disbursement according to the percentage indicated Therefore, to enable the immediate transfer of this fund to you arranged, you must apply first to the bank as relation or next of kin of the deceased indicating your bank name, your bank account number, your private telephone and fax number for easy and effective communication and location where in the money will be remitted.

Upon receipt of your reply, I will send to you by fax or email the text of the application . I will not fail to bring to your notice this transaction is hitch-free and that you should not entertain any atom of fear as all required arrangements have been made for the transfer. You should contact me immediately as soon as you receive this letter.

Trusting to hear from you immediately.
Yours Faithfully,
MR JOHN WILLIAM.

OK that's me zzz

by Znethru @ 20 Jun. 2006 - 01.06:49

Must be getting to that time of night again (sigh) time to drift off into a heavenly atmosphere of incandescence redolent of journeys past and pastures green, ambient with the fervour of missed opportunity and amber boscage.

Where's my toothbrush?

I'm on a high (or is that a roll?)...

by Znethru @ 20 Jun. 2006 - 01.03:30

Jelly Roll Morton was the first great composer and piano player of Jazz. He was a talented arranger who wrote special scores that took advantage of the three-minute limitations of the 78 rpm records. But more than all these things, he was a real character whose spirit shines brightly through history, like his diamond studded smile. As a teenager Jelly Roll Morton worked in the warehouses of Storyville as a piano player. From 1904 to 1917 Jelly Roll rambled around the South. He worked as a gambler, pool shark, pimp, vaudeville comedian and as a pianist. He was an important transitional figure between ragtime and jazz piano styles. He played on the West Coast from 1917 to 1922 and then moved to Chicago and where he hit his stride. Morton's 1923 and 1924 recordings of piano solos for the Gennett label were very popular and influential.
